Getting Started with MyPhotoMap
Welcome to MyPhotoMap! This guide will help you navigate the core features of the application, from uploading your first photo to organizing your travel memories into trips.
1. Uploading Images
Native Mobile Apps (Recommended)
The fastest and most reliable way to get photos from your mobile device onto your map is by using our native mobile apps. Because mobile web browsers strip out critical geolocation data for security and privacy reasons during upload, using the MyPhotoMap mobile app ensures your memories are perfectly preserved and instantly charted.
Once you've installed the app, simply log in and use your favorite photo gallery app. Within your file or gallery app, select your favorite photos, activate the Share menu, select MyPhotoMap, and send them directly to your library! You can even add tags and assign them to a trip right from the share interface. Editing an image's title and description is also possible, but only when uploading one at a time.
Web App (Alternate Method)
If you prefer to upload directly from your desktop computer, the web-based Upload page allows you to add up to 20 images at once (more for subscribers) and apply tags and an optional trip during upload.
- Go to Dashboard > Upload, then choose files with the picker or drag and drop into the drop zone.
- Optionally choose a trip and add comma-separated tags. Those values are applied to each file in the batch.
- Click Upload and watch per-file progress. Failed files stay visible with an error reason so you can retry quickly.
- After success, open Library to review, filter, and edit image metadata.
2. Managing Trips
Trips allow you to organize your photos by event or vacation. You can group photos together to see specific collections on the map, link parent/sub-trips to build a hierarchy, and share them securely.
Go to the Trips page in your Dashboard.
Click "Create New Trip". Enter a name for your trip (e.g., "Paris 2024") and click Create.
Select a trip from the dropdown menu to open its editor. Once open, you can update its details, set a Parent Trip to organize related travels into a hierarchy, or modify its Visibility.
Trips can be Private, Invite-Only (shared with specific email addresses), Semi-Private (shared via private link wrapper), or Public. You can also favorite shared trips, which will show up in the Favorites dashboard tab.
3. The Photo Library
The Library is your working area for search, review, export, and image updates. Use the filter bar at the top, then click Update to apply all filter changes at once.
- Filter by trip, including a dedicated No Trips option.
- Filter by geo status with Has Geo Data and No Geo Data.
- Filter by user tags using a comma-separated list and choose All or Any matching.
- Set a date range, sort order, and results-per-page, then page through the results.
- Use Reset to clear filters quickly and return to the default view.
- Use export to download filtered data in .csv or .kml (plan-dependent).
Tip: the active filter badges above export show exactly what is currently applied.
4. Editing Image Details
Click any image card to open the details modal. The modal has three tabs: Details, Map, and Original.
How to Edit
Open an image from Library, update fields on the Details tab, then click Save. Your library view refreshes automatically.
- Title & Description: Edit text directly in the modal before saving.
- Date Taken: Adjust the captured date without losing existing time metadata.
- Tags: Enter comma-separated tags; system tags are managed automatically.
- Trips: Assign or remove trip association from the trip selector.
- Map tab: Pan the map to update the saved latitude and longitude for the image.
- Original tab: View the full-resolution image in an interactive pan and zoom viewer. Scroll or pinch to zoom; click and drag to pan; double-click to reset the view.
- Delete: You can permanently delete an image from this view.
Use Reset to discard unsaved edits and restore the current saved values. While on the Details tab, use the left and right arrow keys to step through images without closing the modal.
5. Your Profile
This is your public identity. Before sharing your beautiful map with friends, family, or the world, you'll need to pick a unique username. Don't stress too much—you can always change it later!
We want your dashboard to feel like home. When you log in, your personalized greeting is chosen based on what you've provided us, prioritizing in this order:
- Your First Name (most personal)
- Your Username
- Your Email Address
