Usage Guide

This page documents the full end-to-end usage currently implemented in MyPhotoMap. Start with uploading, manage your collection in Library, organize with Trips, and maintain your account settings as your usage grows.

1. Quick Flow

  1. Upload one or more photos from Dashboard > Upload.
  2. Open Library and apply filters to find specific photos.
  3. Open an image modal to edit metadata, tags, date, trip assignment, and map coordinates.
  4. Use Trips to manage trip names and view mapped images by trip.
  5. Use Account to update profile fields and monitor subscription limits.
  6. Use Support > Feedback to report bugs or submit feature requests.

2. Uploading Images

Web Workflow

  • Upload supports file picker and drag-drop.
  • Batch uploads currently allow up to 20 images and enforce total-size limits.
  • You can apply one trip and a comma-separated tag list to the full batch.
  • Batch Metadata: Selecting multiple files at a time hides the title and description fields to prevent duplicating text across all your photos. In these cases, the default title becomes the filename. If you want to edit your titles or descriptions during upload, select only one file at a time. Otherwise, you can always update these fields later in your Library.
  • Each file is validated for type, size, and filename rules before processing.
  • Per-file results are shown after upload with success, failure, and no-geo indicators.
  • Geo metadata is extracted when available; files without geo still upload successfully.

Mobile Application Workflow

Because mobile browsers automatically strip GPS coordinates and other EXIF data when uploading to a website, MyPhotoMap provides native mobile applications to ensure your photos are mapped correctly.

Get it on Google PlayDownload on the App Store
  • Open your device's native photo gallery or favorite photo/file app, select the images, and tap the Share button.
  • Choose MyPhotoMap from your app list.
  • Select your trip, enter any tags, and upload. Note that selecting multiple photos from your gallery will also hide the title and description fields, functioning identically to the web app.

Tip: if a file fails, review the message in the upload results list and retry just that file after correcting the issue.

Note: photos taken while your device is in airplane mode will not have GPS coordinates embedded in the file. These images will upload successfully but will show as missing geo data.

3. Using the Library

Library is the main workspace for your images. Filter choices are staged first, then applied together when you click Update.

  • Trips: Filter by a specific trip, all trips, or No Trips.
  • Geo: Use Has Geo Data or No Geo Data.
  • User tags: Enter comma-separated tags and choose All or Any match mode.
  • Date range: Filter with from/to date fields.
  • Sort and page size: Control order and images per page.
  • Pagination: Move through pages using bottom controls.
  • Reset: Clears filters and returns to default list settings.

The export panel uses currently active filters and can generate .csv or .kmlwhen export is enabled for your plan. CSV exports include filtered image metadata and temporary download links; KML exports include geotagged images only.

4. Editing Image Details

Clicking a thumbnail opens the image modal, which has three tabs: Details,Map, and Original.

  • Details tab: Edit title, description, tags, trip assignment, and captured date. Save to commit changes; Reset to discard and restore saved values.
  • Map tab: Pan the embedded map to set or update saved latitude and longitude values for the image.
  • Original tab: View the full-resolution source image in an interactive pan and zoom canvas. Scroll or pinch to zoom, click and drag to pan, and double-click to reset to the default fit view.
  • Edit user tags as comma-separated text; system tags are managed by the platform.
  • Assign the image to a trip or clear trip association from the Details tab.
  • Changing metadata updates the database only; it does not rewrite the original image file.
  • Closing the modal without saving discards any unsaved edits.
  • Use Delete for permanent image removal (requires confirmation).
  • While on the Details tab, use the left and right arrow keys to step through images in the current filtered result set without closing the modal.

If you add valid coordinates to an image that previously had no geo data, it will stop appearing in the Missing Geo Data filter.

5. Using the Trips Page

  • Create new trips from the quick add control.
  • Select a trip from the dropdown to filter the page to that trip.
  • Rename or delete the selected trip.
  • Review map markers for photos with geo metadata.
  • Use table and pagination controls to browse trip-linked images.

Deleting a trip does not delete image files; it removes the trip entity and associations.

Organizing with Parent and Sub-trips

MyPhotoMap allows you to organize your photos hierarchically by linking trips together. This is useful when you have a broad category or a large vacation with distinct destinations, allowing you to manage them cleanly without cluttering your main map view.

For example:

  • European Vacation (Parent Trip)
  • ↳ Paris, France (Sub-trip)
  • ↳ Rome, Italy (Sub-trip)

How to create and link a sub-trip:

  1. Navigate to the Trips page and create your overarching parent trip (e.g., "European Vacation") if it doesn\'t already exist.
  2. Create the new trip that will become your sub-trip (e.g., "Paris").
  3. Select your new sub-trip from the dropdown list on the Trips dashboard to view its details.
  4. In the trip details editor, find the Parent Trip dropdown and select your overarching main trip (e.g., "European Vacation").
  5. Click Save Changes.

In the Trips dashboard and on your image tags, you will now see the sub-trip visually nested under its parent trip, keeping your library organized.

6. Working with the Account Page

  • Edit username, email, first name, last name, country, and postal code inline.
  • Email updates require verification with a code sent to the new address.
  • View member since date, current plan, and plan expiration.
  • Track trip and public trip usage with progress bars.
  • Review enabled premium capabilities such as export and advanced EXIF.
  • Use the danger zone for high-impact account actions.

7. Getting Support with Feedback

  • Go to Support > Feedback (login required).
  • Choose a category: Feature Idea, Bug, Billing, or Other.
  • Add a subject (up to 60 chars) and detailed message (up to 10,000 chars).
  • Request a response if follow-up is needed.
  • Optionally attach a screenshot (JPEG, PNG, or WebP up to 10MB).
  • Submit and watch for success or validation error messages.

8. Limits, Quota, and Plan Features

Quota warnings can appear across Dashboard pages as you approach plan limits. Limits may affect upload size, trip totals, public trips, trip image counts, and data export availability.

For capability details, see Support Features. For first-run setup, see Get Started.
